Pros

You get to know your patients very well as there is an average stay of three weeks on my unit. You actually get to make a difference in the patients' life. It is rewarding knowing that you save a life almost everyday. Many opportunities to learn.

Cons

Some of the techs are very rude but remain employed, work gets distributed unequally if you don't belong to a clique (you get all the patients with high acuity). Not much room for growth. I got laid off (received a letter two months prior). Work a lot of long hours without getting paid (did not use a time clock). Nursing staff were expected to sign time sheets). I think NRH had this policy for a reason. They did not want to pay for overtime. Several so called high tech devices did not work and you spend so much time trouble shooting instead of caring for your patients (hand held device for documentation or scanning lab labels, blood pressure machine). Too much time spent on documentation especially after they went live in 2013.
