Pros

Mitchell cares about its employees. There are many employees who have been there for decades and have made a great career from the company. San Diego is a great place to live and the HQ is in a great spot (close to La Jolla - used to be Intuit building) - I used to work at the previous location off of the 15 at CCR and the current office is great. The people. One of the things I enjoyed most about the company was the people and their dedication to continuous improvement. I enjoyed sitting down and having lunch with my friends at work (great courtyard and place to enjoy a break). Alex (the CEO) has a great vision for the P&C market as Mitchell has a competitive niche in it's medical product portfolio (less growth in the automotive side) as it pushes towards a half a billion dollar company. Culture. The company has a great marketing team (compared to other teams i've worked with at other companies) and does some really great things both internally (e.g. devcon, annual sales meeting, etc..) as well as externally (e.g. user conference, called P&C) Product and Engineering - which i worked closely. The product and engineering department had a great focus on developing scalable processes and ensuring the engineering teams were aligned to business goals. In summary, Mitchell is a company that has been around a long time and had has a powerful, recognizable name in the industry. I've made some great friends there and have also learned a lot of "what not to do" from many experiences in the past - which is a pro for me personally. I'd recommend mitchell especially to younger candidates as it has the ability to help you see what a great culture, career driven company has to offer.

Cons

It really depends on what side of the company you choose to work for. On automotive or "APD" (auto physical damage) the competitors in the market are winning the technology race. Mitchell struggles to advance its tech stack - which i believe is it's Achilles heel. If you are a technical person, you will find that the insurance product stack is different from the auto body stack which is different from its platform stack which is different from two other medical stacks and still struggles (is chained with) legacy desktop technology driving the majority of the automotive revenue. The reason why is because the customer base is very slow to adopt to new technology. While mitchell continues to move ahead internally with its new technology practices, the products struggle to keep up because it takes between 5-10 years to really make a shift in tech in the P&C space. I can't speak to the medical side of the company, but i know this is the future of the business - not the automotive side. I think that you have to be careful which role you accept at the company because you could end up wasting a lot of time achieving little to no results because of all the red tape. Mitchell is a big company and has very little ability to do more than a (very) few things well. KKR bought mitchell almost 3 years ago and being a PE owned firm you have to focus on the EBITDA which means that in a landscape of market share stealing you have to optimize profit and keep costs low, while achieving growth to drive your multiples up. The growth is in medical and whatever side of the business your are on, you will find that releasing new products or updates to products are a mind boggling, draining experience. If you are in sales, insurance is a long sales cycle. If you are on the shop side, its small business price / feature wars. Alex introduced the strategy and transformation group a few years ago, after the claims lab failure, which was a team assembled and aimed at big data and platform change (partly to address the tech stack issue i brought up earlier) and has turned out to be a failure other than making medical based acquisitions (which is great for ACS and WCS, but not APD)...a lot of people were moved around and really did not do much and or left. Pay is not great unless you are in management with negotiated variable income.
