Pros

Ocado is a great place to learn new skills or settle down for retirement in the country. There is a can do attitude and surprisingly few constraints. The expansion within the company is crazy meaning there are always opportunities to join at almost any level. The majority of the workforce is young and energetic. The workplace is extremely relaxed, in some areas you could hear a pin drop. Everyone is technical, even the managers. Everyone is learning, even the managers.

Cons

The workforce is largely made of relatively junior engineers with very little commercial experience. As soon as engineers get a few years experience under their belts at Ocado, they tend to leave for more challenging roles. There are numerous projects that are started but never quite finished with a complete lack of documentation. The company is pursuing too many goals and there is a lack of clear leadership or goal setting. Career progression after a few years service is non existant. Engineering practises are mediocre, but there is a general desire to learn. Meetings, about meetings. Has anyone mentioned Hatfield!

Thanks for the review. We're pleased about the positives but would like to address your concerns. With regards to career progression, we can see from the review that you're SSE level so normally your next step would be team lead. There's been a lot of work recently to strengthen this process further. Alternatively, senior management are working on defining a technical (i.e. non managerial) route too, and we're expecting pretty quick progression on this. It's not clear from your review what you feel is blocking your career progression, but we suggest you discuss it with your team lead soon so it can be resolved or any issues you've observed can be raised. (If you're not comfortable speaking to your manager, come and chat to HR or with your council rep.) With regards to your other concerns about goals and leadership, our tech is rapidly evolving, so we are highly agile to allow for this. However, the CTO and other senior managers operate an open door policy, so you should feel free to discuss any issues with them. Keep an eye out for breakfast meetings, blogs, and management walking the floor (Paul's latest divisional email has more info) or get in touch with one of the management team directly.
