Pros

There are many opportunities for scientists to grow and develop their skills due to the vast capabilities and talented pool of technical and scientific professionals. However, it is important for scientists to be proactive and assertive in advocating for their goals, as some political maneuvering may be necessary. Instead of simply complaining, it is better to speak up and actively push for what you want. While there may be some risks involved, the potential rewards of pursuing your goals with determination far outweigh any potential drawbacks.

Cons

The lack of leadership training and experience among scientists can contribute to poor performance in senior leadership roles. While academic achievement is not necessarily indicative of leadership abilities, it is often used as a criterion for selecting directors and leaders. However, this can be problematic as research success often requires self-centered behavior, which is incompatible with effective leadership. It is not surprising that mistakes are made in the selection process due to the limited understanding of management and leadership within the scientific community. Low salaries for the Bay Area cost of Living Lots of corruption, like all over the United States of course. The decision-makers can hire whoever they want, they can promote whoever they like, they can give raises/bonuses to whoever they prefer, and pretty much they have enormous flexibility. As long as you (or your protector) make it to the decision-makers club, then you are set! There are numerous lazy and laid-back employees because there are no regular performance-based layoffs. This can be due in part to the low salary offered for these non-science roles, as there are not many candidates eager to leave their current positions for such positions.
