Pros
Good hourly wage, decent benefits (the 401k match is good), union protection, serving an underserved community, it is a teaching hospital with generally excellent physicians, world-class surgeons and is magnet certified.
Cons
Really poor nurse staffing recently, the union has it's benefits but it also means that some members of the team don't always pull their weight because they don't fear reprisal and it can make the people who care most about the patients feel overwhelmed. It often feels like the highest administrators could not care less about patient safety or the staff, trying to push larger and larger patient assignments, disregarding any issues raised by floor staff. Resources are scarcer than any other hospital I've worked in. Equipment is often broken, supplies go missing, and you spend a lot of time trying to track them down or find creative solutions in a pinch.
