Pros

Paid Holidays, Good Benefits, Plenty of Stories to Tell

Cons

Check out the drop down menu of the E-mail directory and you will see scores of the same last names. This is no coincidence. You might think that a state and federally funded organization would comply to a higher standard based on EEOC and AAP guidelines and be focused on creating a fair, transparent, above board selection process, but they have actually formalized and codified nepotistic and corrupt hiring practices. Generations of families are employed there, thereby limiting the "wealth" to vast extended families with members of limited ability and lots of slackers. Some departments only hire whites that are less qualified than applicants of color. Recruiters wink and nod and talk about being talent scouts (huge joke). Managers, more often than not, engage in unfair management practices, and bullying and disrespect is the norm, and HR usually supports illegal management practices or looks the other way. Grievances, which are supposed to be resolved within 30 days per written policy, can go on for a year or more, and by that time the grievant has been abused beyond even a sadist's dream. The more like Catbert of Dilbert notoriety an aspiring manager is (flatterer of the powerful and abuser of those below), the more likely his or her ascendance. Expect professionalism and fairness? Forget it. Side step the bloated HR staff (lots of lawyers who didn't make it in their professions and turn HR into an Alice in Wonderland experience) and go straight to FEHA or a lawyer. In order to preserve their leisurely lifestyles, they prefer to let the State pay out millions in damages. MD Management and fat cat department administrators hire a stable of marginally experienced and educated women and delegate decisions to them. As a result, projects cost millions more than expected and are poorly implemented requiring calling in a bevy of consultants to fix a botch job. The fat cats still get obscenely large bonuses. Take a walk through office areas and hallways: filthy. Need high quality medical care in a sanitary environment? Call Sutter.

Pros

Great benefits, if you choose the highest tier options. Lower tier options are okay. Good leave options (if you choose highest tier options). If you care about stuff like academic or scholarly reputation, then it’s a great place. Especially if you put that above your worth as a human being and others worth as human beings.

Cons

Microaggressions. Disorganized and non-transparent leadership Passive aggressive approaches to problem-solving. Tensions are never resolved. Supervisors may or may not properly address time card needs. They WILL low ball your pay. They will come at you with the lowest tier pay option and tell you that “HR doesn’t negotiate.” Or that compensation doesn’t. Well, they do. Negotiate for what you deserve or decline the job. It won’t be worth it. It is known across CA that UC Davis low balls pay. Not all roles are union represented and if you are not represented, prepare to be treated however they see fit. They look to external businesses to solve their internal problems.
