Pros

- Academic institution with solid clinical research. - Majority of providers genuinely care about their patients and strive to deliver the highest quality of care possible. - Retirement - Co-workers (depending on department)

Cons

Don't be misled into believing UC Davis prioritizes patient care and positive patient outcomes. Their focus is primarily on generating revenue. They are heavily investing in new buildings while simultaneously laying off employees, including those directly involved in patient care. While expanding access to care is positive, it is pointless without enough providers to see patients, regardless of how impressive the new facilities are. Providers are under constant pressure from executives without clinical experience to increase patient volume and decrease appointment times, making it clear patient care is secondary to financial goals. Management quality varies greatly depending on the department, and some managers create a toxic work environment. Reporting issues to HR or the union often yields no results, allowing these managers to continue bullying and mistreating employees without facing consequences.

Pros

Great benefits, if you choose the highest tier options. Lower tier options are okay. Good leave options (if you choose highest tier options). If you care about stuff like academic or scholarly reputation, then it’s a great place. Especially if you put that above your worth as a human being and others worth as human beings.

Cons

Microaggressions. Disorganized and non-transparent leadership Passive aggressive approaches to problem-solving. Tensions are never resolved. Supervisors may or may not properly address time card needs. They WILL low ball your pay. They will come at you with the lowest tier pay option and tell you that “HR doesn’t negotiate.” Or that compensation doesn’t. Well, they do. Negotiate for what you deserve or decline the job. It won’t be worth it. It is known across CA that UC Davis low balls pay. Not all roles are union represented and if you are not represented, prepare to be treated however they see fit. They look to external businesses to solve their internal problems.
