Pros
1-Health Insurance through Blue Cross/Shield. Starts day 1 of tenure-track employment. 2- Salary is competitive with other education institutions. 3- Employees get discounts on certain things at UVU store, however, store is totally changed now and very limited in stock. 4-Had a personal office and computer. 5- Summer is generally off unless you have obligations in-place. 6-Holidays Off. 7- Winter break is two to three weeks off.
Cons
1- Tenure-track positions are setup to fail. If you don’t know someone to guide you, which there is NO requirement from the University to assist you through the difficult process. They claim you have 6 years, but they can fire you at mid-term review with no reason or proof. It happened to me. 3- If you’re conservative, pretend not to be and shut up. You will be targeted like me. 4- Never do your best if it’s better than ANY tenured professors best in the department. You will become a target and snubbed out by “the club”. Play dumb and don’t rock the boat. The tenured Professors, committee chair/members, department chair, all are nearly fire proof and become lazy, do not EVER do anything that threatens the small amount of effort they put in. 5- GET EVERY PROMISE IN WRITING. Academics tend to be pathological liars and will cut your throat for nearly any reason. If your promised something, get proof. 6- Grade how they tell you to. They say student reviews don’t matter, but they do massively. Give as many A grades as you can. If you grade honest like me and give every student a fair shot you will be punished. You will learn some students have connections and not giving those students what they think they should get could be your career.
