Pros

I loved working with the content at Expedia. The benefits were also quite good - not necessarily the travel benefits (I thought these were a little hard to come by), but the medical and time off is quite fair. Also, many groups are very open to working from home after you've proven yourself.

Cons

Management is horrible! I moved from division to division and never once had a great manager. It was terribly difficult to move up in the company due to a "lateral move" policy. Also, the performance management system was biased, based on a bell curve concept. Employees' concerns were not addressed properly and there was little respect shown for employees. Salaries were below par and it was hard to make any significant increases in pay within the company.

Pros

The people try very hard to do the right thing. The people that have remained after the great purge of the last few years are still commited and focused yet are shouldering more and more of the burden.

Cons

The culture has deteriorated from a once great and inovative company. The turnover continued even as manager after senior manager left with no regards for the history or complexity of the system. People have been treated as interchangable parts and their value was not truely appreciated until they were gone and things "didn't work for some reason". The leadership lacks a basic understanding of the complexity of the systems yet make decisions based on who can make the best presentaions.

Pros

Some of the positives include the opportunity to work in the travel sector, contributing to customers planning and booking stages of their vacations, working in an environment filled with smart, talented people, and great benefits. There is a lot of collaboration and opportunity to solve complex and challenging issues. Regardless of what department or function an employee is in, there is a need to think creatively and deal with ambiguity. If you like working in a dynamic environment that gives you personal autonomy in exchange for accountabiltiy, opportunity to work on a variety of projects, and the ability to shape your career path, then Expedia is a good fit.

Cons

An employee's experience vastly differs based on what team or organization they work in. This is consistent with other large technology companies. In the technology-specific functions, some of the downsides include lack of consistent vision and understanding of how your role contributes to overall goals, working long hours, shortage of individual contributors to perform needed tasks, and reduced morale due to a series of re-organizations, re-alignements of headcount, outsourcing, and turnover. Other employees find that they have difficulty defining what other groups at Expedia do. There isn't always standardization of job functions or transparency in seniority. Lack of documentation or a knowledge base is a common issue across many organizations.
