Pros

I very much enjoy working on so many different projects that are relevant to issues happening in the world today. With only a few exceptions, everyone in the office is smart, friendly and highly motivated. There is a tiny bit of office politics but I think you get that everywhere. A nice mix of working together in teams but not always having to interact with other people. If you are diligent about how you use your time you can create a pretty good work life balance. It is definitely not expected that people work on weekends or stay late, just that you get your work done!

Cons

My one main gripe with Exponent is that there is little room for upward mobility. You really have to push to get facetime with clients and meeting clients on your own at conferences etc. is a matter of sheer luck. There are so many people that have been in the exact same position for 10+ years. That is really demoralizing. To make matters worse they often hire in upper management. I understand that people with contacts and experience in the field are able to bring in more clients but the company really needs to find a way to develop talent from within

Exciting but underpaid.

Pros

Great benefits. People are enjoyable to work with. Well-known in the industry. Always something different to work on.

Cons

The raises and bonuses for lower-level employees are below market for someone in a similar position with another company. Have significantly higher UT rate quotas than other consulting firms, which makes taking vacations or any personal time off difficult.

Pros

Extremely receptive to hiring people with only academic experience (i.e., fresh out of grad school), which can be a great alternative to those considering post-doctoral work. You'll get a greater variety of work than you thought possible, and have some big brains to bounce ideas off. Something approaching "fun" may ensue. The pay is reasonable. Entry-level employees can get massive overtime.

Cons

Not a particularly helpful or supportive work environment. A fellow employee (or even your boss) will gladly throw you under the bus to save themselves if you share a mistake. No orientation, no actual "managing," little praise or encouragement. The fight for billable work and credit for bringing in clients can make for a tense atmosphere, especially between the more junior and more senior staff, but also for those of equal rank. You are only as good as the amount of money you are bringing in, and little time is afforded for you to learn your job before high expectations are placed. Taking time off (even a personal day) is begrudged and counted against your annual billing quotient.
