Stalinist enterprise

Pros

Competitive salaries; global projects of significance

Cons

This company is like a centrally planned economy - there are legions of “planners” who try and plan everything, and a command and control structure that is unbelievable. Nothing happens quickly or flexibly, new ideas are not readily accepted, outside information is viewed with suspicion, and internal communications have a whiff of propaganda about them. This has led to the demise of a once great company now struggling to adapt to a face paced, unpredictable world, that has changed beyond the ability of the “planners” to cope with.

Pros

Very competitive salary. Working in EMRE and then Global Projects has not been too challenging. Work life balance has been good.

Cons

Never join Cost, Schedule, Controls discipline within Global Projects. You will never get out. Way too many middle managers. Very old fashion and hierarchal. 5 years ago the company was producing cost estimates with software nearly 30 years old. Utilized excel for everything. Self feeding system of ineffective initiatives. Ranking system dictates employees to develop new tools and process that then slow down a very bureaucratic system further. Did I mention WAY TOO many middle managers?

Old school and out of touch

Pros

Decent benefits, WFH flexibility depending on your boss, horizontal movement is regular and you can experience a lot of different roles throughout your career.

Cons

Lack of transparency, management is not upfront/honest/straightforward. WFH flexibility is 100% dependent on your personal boss, who is typically not held accountable to any company standard. Staying technical is not only not rewarded, but practically punished by putting ceilings on your career progression and raises. Company has recently not been treating long standing employees well.
