Pros
My coworkers were the best part of this job, absolutely wonderful people. I am only giving three stars for that reason. Patients would be the next best. Of course you get the occasional grump but overall it's enjoyable interacting with people and even better when they come back and remember you as well as you remember them. Health insurance was decent, dental quite good. Excellent discounts on product. Philanthropic efforts.
Cons
This is a corporate retail environment. They don't care about you, so don't expect them to. Revenue is their priority. I had to work full time hours for a year before receiving full time benefits (it's only illegal past that) despite others being hired full time with benefits months after I started. I was also paid significantly less than new hires despite being there for over 2 years. When asking for a raise, I was met with a "we'll try." I also was not able to be cross trained and remained very stagnant. If you are liked well enough by the right people, you'll likely be treated a bit better, but again it is a retail kind of environment. You're not really a priority at all. If you are interested in trying out optics for a career, definitely work here. You will gain great experience. But it's not likely going to be a great career choice.
