Pros

The general management at FTI is on the right track. For example, since I’ve been here, maternity leave has increased tremendously to 16 weeks! They just increased paternity leave a few weeks ago to 10 weeks, up from 6 weeks. They want happy employees and the moves they generally make reflect that.

Cons

As much as general management is doing, your life is dictated by the SMD you’re under. If you have a terrible one, they can make life extremely difficult. And when it comes to your compensation and reviews at the firm, what they say goes. It’s a little irritating because you see favorites play out a lot. If an SMD likes a certain employee and wants them to succeed, they can jump the ladder in a mere few years while those that work just as hard, if not harder, are left behind. That’s the downside of a large company.

It's consulting

Pros

I went from Big 4 to FTI and there are definite benefits to a smaller, more analytical firm. The work we're doing is more rigorous and I'm more confident in it and you have better access to senior leadership. Pretty much everyone here Senior Director and below has been great - personable, not overly competitive, smart, and hard-working. Leaders have been engaged and respectful on projects and have taken an active interest in getting to know and developing junior team members. FTI has much more of a team mentality than other firms I've been exposed to.

Cons

It's consulting - long hours and poor work-life balance with the expectation that you pay your dues and are always available to work. Slow adoption of technology that would make the job easier. Fewer perks than you'd see at a big firm (e.g., travel discounts, wellness funds). Definitely has some work to do on D&I, culturally.

Pros

Access to meetings with C-level executives and some high profile situations

Cons

Compensation is half of the competition. Incredibly siloed culture where you can be busy for the year, but others in your class are sitting in their cubicle. At the end of the year compensation comes out of a "black box" and if the SMD you work for doesn't go to bat for you, then don't expect any difference in compensation from the prior year. FTI's strategy is to retain the SMDs above all else and let the "staff" underneath them cycle through as they get burned out and see opportunities for better compensation and work elsewhere.
