Terribly Mismanaged

Pros

The pay, benefits, and work life balance are good. If you value diversity & inclusion this is the place for you.

Cons

DOE and FRA Management is an absolute train wreck, negligently incompetent at all levels. Oh and there is currently a hiring freeze and voluntary buyout program in place due to FRA's in ability to effectively budget for it's operations; and FRA's subcontract with DOE is being recompeted and FRA may no longer manage Fermilab in six months or so. The mood and atmosphere at here Fermilab are not positive and many are looking to move on. The new hires we do bring in are very often shocked at how utterly backwards we are here at Fermilab.

Pros

The benefits are nice, including the 403b.

Cons

There is defiantly a social class hierarchy here at Fermilab where the PHD Physicists are gods and everyone else is a lower form of life, the culture is rife with unchecked egos and often times toxic with . There appears to be no accountability at any level within this organization; under performance and incomitance are allowed to fester almost in perpetuity. If you have any ambition, drive, or lofty career goals then Fermilab is really not the place for you. On the outside one would think or even would assume that Fermilab would be a well managed, technically advanced, highly organized, and efficient organization; but that assumption would be false. Outside of the science being performed at Fermilab the operations side of the organization currently lags that of general industry by almost a decade or more at all levels. This is the organization where careers come to die.
