Pros

this is a interesting question

Cons

Failed management from top to bottom. job security just as private company. laid off ~4% last year. It cultivates a culture that encourages people not to work. some people don't have much work or they pretend to be very busy. managers take advantages of people who honors their work. So, some people have always work on priorities. No time to learn and develop themselves. Tasks are assigned based on capacity instead of pay grade. Promotion is about 5 years if you are lucky. It's getting harder to ask people to work as management delayed merit increase for 3 months already this year. Over the last 5 years after tax salary is about 10% behind inflation. Great waste of money on many aspects. Yet, Hard to find a section of road in good condition. A lot of people are close to retirement. the mid 30's people are the most unhappy group.

Innovative science, gorgeous campus, diversity and lots of opportunities to learn about experiments.

Cons

Outdated systems, too many managers, corrupted policies and favoritism running rampant.
