Pros

Compassionate people who are here because they want make a difference. You're allowed to make mistakes and everyone is invested in helping you grow. CEOs are very transparent and communicate often. Lots of great perks: free food, beer on tap, trivia nights, game nights, unlimited PTO, etc.

Cons

Day to day you’re exposed to a ton of info about clinical trials, data abstraction, drugs & treatment, etc. You’ll learn something new every day, but if you’re not interested in cancer research or health-tech, this is probably not the place for you.

Fast-Paced Company with an Important Mission

Pros

At Flatiron you get to work in cross-functional teams of brilliant people from different backgrounds focused on a mission that truly matters: improving the lives of cancer patients. The management philosophy of the company revolves around distributed decision-making so the people closest to the problem are trusted to make the decisions. This means that you quickly earn a lot of responsibility and can have a big impact in the company. Flatiron strongly believes in a meritocratic culture. Office politics are minimal, career progression is clearly defined and regular 360 performance reviews determine career advancement rather than asking for a raise. Flatiron is extremely transparent. The management teams frequently and clearly communicate on company goals, direction and decisions. The company quickly iterates in response to feedback which is actively encouraged and valued. Great benefits/snacks/social events/etc

Cons

Flatiron is a young rapidly growing company. This means that there are growing pains and that many aspects of the job will not be spelled out for you. Instead, you are encouraged to experiment and figure those aspects of the job out for yourself and then create a process for those who follow you. People at Flatiron are also very driven by and focused on the mission. Employees work hard and there isn't the laid back nerf gun wars/ping pong tournaments/etc environment that one might expect from a tech startup.

Pros

Working at Flatiron has been the most rewarding experience of my career so far. My coworkers are a pleasure to work with -- across the board they are not only extremely smart but also very humble and collaborative. Individuals have a lot of freedom around how to do their jobs and there are many opportunities to make a direct impact on the success of the organization. There is a strong culture of teaching/learning and I am constantly learning new knowledge and skills. I have a huge amount of respect for the founders and really feel like they care about our well-being. Finally, the mission is real. Many tech companies claim to be making the world a better place but at Flatiron you are actually coming to work every day and making a difference in the fight against cancer. The company has a lofty vision but I think is very well positioned to be successful and it feels like a privilege to be a part of it.

Cons

Flatiron is growing very fast and you need to be comfortable with change and ambiguity to be successful here. As a young company there are a lot of new processes being rolled out and these are never perfect the first time around. However, there are many avenues for feedback which are effective if you take advantage of them.
