Mostly a negative experience

Pros

Free catered lunches! That was pretty cool. You also get free food around the office (so breakfast) and dinner if you stay past a certain time (so always). And HR hosts a lot of events with snacks and drinks.

Cons

The people at Flatiron are undoubtedly very smart, but they are extremely pretentious about their educational and work backgrounds. Many people are coming directly from PhD programs, bringing that culture over and lacking an understanding for what it means to be in the private sector: how to work with other employees, and how to grow talent. Work culture is terrible -- 12-14hr days are normal, and if you're working less than that, then you are clearly slacking off. Managers are cliquey and inexperienced. The company has grown very fast and they are having issues scaling. New people join every couple of weeks and very little is done to get them on-boarded. There is little training on the subject-matter and poor mentorship and leadership. Flatiron has a great mission, and their employees are passionate about that mission. But because of this, politics and internal investment are often overlooked.

Pros

I feel so lucky to be working at Flatiron as my first software engineering job out of college. At Flatiron, I've found a tremendously supportive culture, which coupled with the great intelligence of the employees, makes for excellent learning opportunities. It is also great to work on such important problems at Flatiron, and know that that is important to every member of the company. Overall, I've been so happy with my experience at Flatiron.

Cons

Hmmm, I suppose for someone who is used to/wanted to work at a very large company (i.e. Google, Microsoft), there may be certain aspects of Flatiron that might not be what they hoped for just due to the size and age of Flatiron. But I also feel like Flatiron's size and growth offers a lot of new opportunities and benefits. So really just depends on what you're looking for.

Pros

This is an incredible company, and I truly love working here. We are solving problems that matter, and I get to work with the smartest people I know while doing it. Management cares about your needs, and they are dedicated to making sure their employees are happy. The benefits are marvelous, and the work is so rewarding.

Cons

The work is grueling, and excellence is demanded. If you are looking for an easy day job, this isn't it, but this is a place where your voice matters, and your work counts.
