Pros

Bright people throughout the company, plenty of accomplished, experienced, kind individuals. Great perks and nice laidback atmosphere. Opportunities to take initiative and definitely more of a meritocracy than the average place. High up execs and leaders are relatively accessible and transparent. Good pay and benefits.

Cons

Innovation seems to have slowed drastically, and not sure if the company can sustain its growth and accomplish its lofty goals. Plenty of time is spent ramping up new employees. Technology is quickly becoming outdated and cumbersome and, rather than doing things about it, leaders just lump it as "tech debt" and go on about their day. Compared to the early days, much less scrappy and fast-paced and much more bureaucracy and politics. Need to learn lots of medical knowledge that isn't likely useful for your next job. General distrust and negativity for new leaders who have been hired recently.

Pros

Current pros are still PTO and remote work flexibility.

Cons

Internal mobility has mostly ceased. No backfill for attrition. Perks were slashed in 2023 (no more professional development budget, cell reimbursement or gym/lifestyle fund) and layoffs have been made. As of April 26th we got a generic “Roche wants us to tighten the budget” email again with another update to come May 10th. Lack of transparency has become the norm, as well as the threat of looming layoffs.

Fast-Paced Company with an Important Mission

Pros

At Flatiron you get to work in cross-functional teams of brilliant people from different backgrounds focused on a mission that truly matters: improving the lives of cancer patients. The management philosophy of the company revolves around distributed decision-making so the people closest to the problem are trusted to make the decisions. This means that you quickly earn a lot of responsibility and can have a big impact in the company. Flatiron strongly believes in a meritocratic culture. Office politics are minimal, career progression is clearly defined and regular 360 performance reviews determine career advancement rather than asking for a raise. Flatiron is extremely transparent. The management teams frequently and clearly communicate on company goals, direction and decisions. The company quickly iterates in response to feedback which is actively encouraged and valued. Great benefits/snacks/social events/etc

Cons

Flatiron is a young rapidly growing company. This means that there are growing pains and that many aspects of the job will not be spelled out for you. Instead, you are encouraged to experiment and figure those aspects of the job out for yourself and then create a process for those who follow you. People at Flatiron are also very driven by and focused on the mission. Employees work hard and there isn't the laid back nerf gun wars/ping pong tournaments/etc environment that one might expect from a tech startup.
