Pros

Flexibility, platform for learning. Self paced environment. Weekly newsletter to inform of upcoming conventions and pictures the office. Flexibility would be the first word when describing the position.

Cons

As a current virtual long time seasoned Abstractor I am noticing a sense of not knowing what to expect. Abstractors do discuss work related topics on our own time. I would suggest reviewing the past 60 days of employees terminated. I have read emails of leadership blaming another department for the decisions being made and vice versa for several firings. This makes my intentions of remaining with Flatiron less appealing. The big picture is getting lost in quick production opposed to strong workers.

Pros

Flexible, decent pay, reimbursement for education, sick time

Cons

THE STRESS. You are constantly being tested. One wrong answer can cost you your job. Evaluations are weighted weird. You can do 6 tasks 100% correct and answer one question wrong on the 7th and fail the evaluation... and be terminated. It's ridiculous. No real help offered when you try to reach out for support on a concept that is vague. Communication is nil. You are only allowed to submit electronically and wait - no phone numbers. They have a threatening environment in which "termination" is mentioned in every form of communication. NOT WORTH IT!

Pros

I've had nothing short of an outstanding experience in my time so far at Flatiron. The company is trying to solve really challenging problems, and does so while infusing its employees with freedom to roam, explore and expand their technical skills. The passion and drive are self-evident as you walk throughout the office-- the people you work with are inspiring, and will take the extra time to explain to you why you should be excited as well. The vast, vast majority of people I have encountered here seem to embody genuine kindness, which is hard to find in the workplace due to inherent bureaucracy and work politics.

Cons

The working hours are more demanding than your average start-up (~10 hours a day) but I think that is normal for high performing young companies that are scrappy and trying to prove the resilience of their business model. Also, SO many delicious sweets around the office so difficult to eat healthy (first world problems...), but also many great fruits available.
