Pros

If you love working outside and maritime work, aquatics and learning about motor vessels and water sports it can be interesting and fun

Cons

Management and ownership is unprofessional, disorganized, and underpays loyal, hard working staff. Doesn’t take proper care of equipment, management doesn’t help or train. They let members sign up and rent boats with minimal safety requirements and most of the renters have no idea how to operate a motor vessel correctly, or know how to navigate the waters they signed up to rent the boat… most have no idea what’s going on for some reason? Management disregards staff needs, takes advantage of staff time and effort, management offers no clear help or guidance. Only worried about signing up people to rent boats and gaining extra sign ups for money.. the sign on fee for boat club can be between $3k - $8k Management is rude, unprofessional, lacks communication, lacks proper care or safety, never created a schedule, texted rude things to boat and dock staff. Everything was disorganized. Didn’t supply proper equipment to clean or mechanically take care of boats as needed. The didn’t care because boats and office were leased. Management blamed everything on staff. Management would take weeks to respond to calls and emails and seemed to have a general disregard for others/staff.

Great job for college student

Pros

Started at the end of my college career and it is fantastic, hourly plus tips and access to boats at a low cost with the employee membership plan. The flexibility is wonderful also and if you work under great management the opportunities to learn are endless. Also great for community building as after repeat interactions you get to know your members super well. Plus good benefits and 401k contributions.

Cons

Brunswick/Freedom claims to love cultivate talent and to hire from within but after a number of applications and only a handful of interviews in many roles relevant to operations as well as my degree path I found this not to be the case. Also corporate locations tend to have barebones boats (lack of stereo systems adequate nav/depth finders) despite owning most (not all) subsidiary companies that produce equipment. These frustrations often get taken out on the dock staff and it does have an impact on earnings.
