Pros

Engineers have a long leash and can take on their own projects. There's a lot of freedom to explore one's own ideas and solutions to issues arising in the existing technology. That attracts fairly interesting coworkers.

Cons

Work can be very routine. Depending on the group, there can be limited advancement potential. Funding is always a little uncertain. Pay tends to be a bit low.

Not pushy. The workload is not too much.

Cons

No up opportunities. No training provided. "screw-up" culture.
