Pros

The company offers many, many tools to let you do your job easier and to make your personal life easier. Great campus life, great tranportation services, great community spirit. Certain departments have more fun than others and have more opportunities for career growth

Cons

Extremely competetive! Especially if you want to internally make a career transition. There is a great difference between the research, development, and business groups on campus.

Pros

Genentech has been a place where people care about their work, and are focused on getting things done. Management is relatively competent and does not often stand in the way of progress. The culture is fantastic, and the company does a very good job of recognizing and rewarding individual and team success. In a large company it is easy to lose sight of what you do, and how it fits into the big picture. Genentech does a very good job to make sure everyone sees the positive impact its products have on patients. This sort of thing goes beyond money or recognition, and is a tremendous motivating factor for everyone that I work with.

Cons

Genentech was just acquired by Roche, and it is unclear how much of the culture and workforce will change. There are definitely negative feelings here toward Roche. I'm not entirely sure why, but I think people are afraid drastic changes are imminent. These feelings, in addition to the general uncertainty surrounding a merger will be a big obstacles to retaining staff, and retaining focus on goals.

Pros

Speaking from my experience in research and development , Genentech is fantastic development for ambitious workers, particularly from people coming from academia looking to jump into industry jobs. The best description is an accelerated research environment. Worrying about logistics (worrying about ordering supplies, how much are these reagents going to cost, stuff like that) is never an obstacle for doing a study. Research groups are very eager to help one another. It is very easy to find an expert willing to offer assistance.

Cons

Depending on the group, work/life balance becomes an issue. There is little to no opportunity to advance beyond Research associate unless you have a phd. Due to the high skill level of people hired to the company, it can be somewhat difficult to move into other research areas/labs within the company.
