Great job for those that love the area

Pros

Great experience, work with lots of different diciplines, job security with long term military contracts, quick expansion on engineering knowledge

Cons

Some internal politics to deal with, long hours required from employees, on the lower end of vacation benefits, company is located in area with harsh winters and they rarely close the offices for snow unless it's an official state closure.

Good first job... but needs work to keep people longer-term

Pros

Interesting work, great job security (the Navy's not going anywhere, and the projects have huge lifespans). Knowledge base of senior engineers is huge. Reasonably close to NYC and Boston.

Cons

Company seems to treat engineers as replaceable and does a bad job of retaining young engineers. The supervisors and managers care, but don't get the backup from higher up to do much. People hitting 3-5 years experience.seem to leave en masse. "Reasonably close to NYC and Boston" also means "in the dead zone of nothing that lies smack in the middle of the two".

-Extremely talented senior workforce in the engineering group, which you expect out of a company that has been around for a very long time. -Great job security, management at the top of the company does an incredible job ensuring contracts come in and will continue to come in for new design and construction work -Enormously diverse in terms of job function. Rotation program allows work in design and construction environments. Every type of engineer (EE, ME, CE) are used at Electric Boat -Great work-life balance. Flexible work week allows for long weekends when necessary. -Extremely committed to quality due to the necessity for safety of US Navy personnel operating in the machines they design -Tuition for advanced degrees fully covered

Cons

-Beautiful area but lacks amenities of a dense suburb and still shares NY/CT high tax and cost
