Pros

Flexible work schedule. 9/80 with a two week time card system. Good opportunities to work with fairly new technology (something that is difficult to come by in defense contracting world). Excellent on site gym with everything you would want at a gym. They have yoga and other fitness classes. The office is right next to San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail so you can run/walk/bike on the trail before, during, or after work. Excellent amenities for bicycle commuters. There are bike lanes leading to every entrance. They have bike lockers, showers. They had a great cafeteria, but chose to go with different vendor. The new vendor was good for a while then bad (like one day it was closed without warning). Seems to be okay now. I have been fortunate enough to get decent raises and a promotion so I would say they have good compensation. I know others that haven't received quite as good raises.

Cons

Every year they cut benefits and raises. It is like they don't want their employees to stay. The focus has been on cost cutting everything for the past several years. At one point they decided they were going to remove computers from conference rooms to save money on maintenance. Thankfully someone talked some sense into them. Fortunately the extreme cost cutting has gotten better under the new president. I have been unfortunate enough to work on the big bad program here. There is no work life balance. I've also unfortunately been stuck on the bad IPT of the big bad program. The IPT leads demand overtime, call you at home if you happen to not be in on an evening or weekend (even if you've finished your tasks). The one pushes back a lot if you take any time off, even one day, even if you've asked of it off days ahead of time (which is just unacceptable when you have to work almost constantly).

Pros

Has great insight into cyber operations.

Cons

Like all DoD contractors, times are tough and being laid off is always a possibility.

Pros

If you're fresh-out of college, they'll hire you very easily. Most people are very laid back. There is somehow a respect for software developers, among the other "engineers" - they think you're really smart. If you're retired from the armed forces, you'll have a "forever home" here. (Con: if you're not one among this group of people, you'll have every little common ground with your colleagues, and worse yet, management)

Cons

There are tons of managers - you'll have at most two "manager type" people who know and might appreciate your work - but there are usually 4-5 layers of additional managers above that within any section of the engineering staff. There are tons of sections, too. With so many managers, and the fact that they play "musical chairs" every few months, you'll never know them, they'll never know you - but they control your merit increases just the same. So, unless you have a great direct manager - one who has been at the company a long time, and has held rank above his position - nobody can, or will, vouch for your work... This is a very poor place to have a fulfilling career as a software developer... ...the majority of senior developers' seniority come from the number of time sheets they've submitted; never mind their ability to guide your career and mentor you through your struggles. If you're hard-working, you'll quickly outpace all of the senior guys, and then realize that they're getting paid 90+ and you, much much less. Hard pill to swallow, as you realize there are no merit increases coming your way, and it's nearly impossible to earn a compensation increase either. Most senior engineer's (software developers) are stuck in the 90's - where there wasn't much special technology coming out, aside from Standard Edition Java and .NET - and they're still livin' it up in the 90's! The business also has a proven track record of abandoning certain factions of developer's hard work: every *worthwhile* senior developer I have met here, has a very depressing story about how a great idea was lost on the poor decisions and lack of interest by the managers and business development team. People are flooding out of here like crazy - with the majority of people staying only for pension benefits, because they're too tired to jump back out on the job market, or that they literally couldn't get hired anywhere else.

General Dynamics Mission Systems Response

Thank you for taking the time to write this honest review. As an employee of GDC4S for more than 5 years, I’m sure you understand that the defense market ebbs and flows. However, I am very pleased to report that our outlook for this year is very optimistic and we look forward to positive changes to come. GDC4S is a large company of nearly 10,000 employees worldwide. Operating a large company like this takes many leaders and we are eager to improve communications among everyone. That is why we are currently working to drastically change if not completely overhaul the SharePoint system you referenced. We are aware of its shortcomings and are eager to make these changes. I would like to add that GDC4S continues to deliver quality services to its customers, which is why new recruits come to GDC4S. And, as a large supplier of military products, we feel strongly about supporting our former military and transitioning servicemen. To your other recommendations, please know that we do take your advice seriously and will be sure to share it with our executive staff. Thank you again for your review.
