Pros

- Tangible progress you can see - construction or repair of a boat from day one to delivery to the customer, then on to the next. - Fast paced work environment - Tremendous responsibility from day 1 which is empowering - Partial tuition reimbursement - "This is the hardest job you will ever have". This is true, my jobs after have been substantially less stressful.

Cons

- Very little training, sink or swim mentality. If your superiors do not help train, which is sadly very common, you are set up to fail. - Overburdened employees. Management needs to increase hires or raise compensation. - Yelling, public belittlement, and insubordination - Promotion based on politics - More rumors and gossip than a high school

Pros

• The NASSCO people are very nice and welcoming. • There is lot of interdepartmental team building and cross-departmental training which is really great. • The benefits are good. The benefits administrator is stellar. • The Mission Valley facilities are very nice, and conveniently located. • The work hours are 7 am to 3:30 pm. There’s no traffic in the morning but learn the back-roads for the afternoon commute. • Every retail store and restaurant you’d ever need exists in Mission Valley, which makes it extremely convenient for lunches, or running errands on the way home. • There appears to be room to move around within the company, so if you can survive long enough, you could likely move up if you are so inclined.

Cons

• There is a lot of turnover in the department because of the low pay and toxic work environment. • People are forever in “CYA Mode,” so backstabbing is rampant. • The arcane MRP system is tremendously difficult to master with no formal training available. • Be prepared to take the NASSCO shuttle to the shipyard regularly (which inevitably eats into the time needed to complete a heavy workload). Driving your own car to the yard is impractical because there is limited parking. • Overtime pay was not permitted. • If you have never been in the manufacturing or defense industries, just skip it. You will not get the foundational training and support that you need to be successful from this particular department.
