Pros

Great leadership, easy going and logical without any politics at engineering level. Really interesting and challenging problems that we have to solve from time to time. Growing (albeit slowly) company which is not afraid to change. No quarterly losses in more than 10 years. This company handles crises very well. Flexible work schedule, good work-life balance. For people living in Peninsula and commuting by car Daly City is probably the best location in Bay Area.

Cons

Genesys is in the holding pattern at the moment and we do not hear much about new big plans. Apparently current owner is trying to sell the company and management just does not want to make any significant moves. Engineering salaries are pretty low but engineers over 40 should be happy just to have a job in Bay Area. Extremely difficult to get new hardware. 5 year old desktops and even older monitors are the norm and if something happens to your computer then it is easier to go and buy your own than to deal with whoever should be in charge. Without engineering day we would not even know what other engineers are doing.

Pros

- Truly global, no joking here when you hear about the company being global - Most departments and managers are flexible - hours for errands and life, work from home options - Most coworkers across various levels and functions appear to be down-to-earth, respectful - Interesting product, best in market

Cons

- The company is beginning to feel awfully generic and lifeless - Pay! - Pay!! - Pay!!! (Did you see my previous lines above about pay being low?) Other than the sales team, employee compensation is very low across all departments. Starting to see higher turnover all throughout. Upper management doesn't seem to care much about this issue, brushes it to the side like it doesn't exist while it's glaring at them right in the eyes. The best people in the company are on their way out or have already left to get more pay elsewhere ... 2006 salaries don't quite cut it in 2016 - Company and managers try to justify low pay with rhetoric like "open time off" or "unique culture" - well, every other SV company out there seems to have a "unique culture" and "open time off" ALONG with decent pay. - In addition to pay, missing many of the employee-centric benefits silicon valley tech firms offer: company provided healthy meals, offices that don't look like "offices," travel benefits, etc, etc.
