Pros

Medical Benefits/Insurance are good Leave Benefits are good Retirement is good if hired for position that qualifies for 401k option Education Benefit

Cons

The Leave amounts awarded to each employee classification are good, however employees hired for upper-level positions are often not in situations by which they can use their leave before it either expires; or rolls over. Unfortunately, GMU does not pay out unused annual leave. Even though it is a benefit to work for a company that offers short-term disability to prevent employees from having to exhaust all of their sick leave for medical situations that require them to be out for an extended period of time. Employees continue to accrue annual leave while out on short-term disability; therefore, this can result in a catch 22 situation for employees who run into a 'use or lose' situation with their annual leave and the end of the year. The Education Benefit is only applicable to taking paid courses at GMU; thus, this is a benefit if you are fortunate to have a major offered at GMU. Additional paid training in your area of work/specialty will depend on support by your individual supervisor and whether the Unit you work for have the funding support to cover it. Some Units are more encouraging than others when it comes this. It would be recommended to address this during the interview process. Teleworking---outside of the pandemic, not all Units are agreeable to teleworking; so again, this is something to address during the interview process.

Pros

Snow days are the best days at Mason

Cons

The environment at Mason is very passive/aggressive on the Finance and Administration side of the campus. In the portion of the organization, the employee is used to make leadership shine and all accomplishments belong to the departmental leader. Very confrontational although ownership of challenges and issues is avoided at all costs. I can't speak to the Academic Affairs part of the campus.
