Pros

There seems to be a great emphasis on treating people fair and always doing the right thing. As Georgia Power is a subsidiary of Southern Company, there are many opportunities in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. The range of jobs is very wide. There are plant, utility, and corporate opportunities all under this one company. The pay is comparable to other utility industries.

Cons

The majority of this company on average has been employed about 25 years. With that I think there is still some old philosophies that are hard to get rid of. This may be more so at the remote sites.

Pros

Flexibility and telecommuting if approved by management. If you are related to the right person or if you are a friend to the right person, the sky is the limit.

Cons

Inconsistent management practices. Generally speaking education, performance and skills are not valued. They say the right things but actions don't match words.

Stable but Dead End Career

Pros

Georgia Power is a stable company with lots of cash flowing into it, because it is basically a monopoly with guaranteed profit. The culture is very predictable. There are no surprises. This company is very slow to change, which can be very comforting to people that want to stay with a company for a long time, doing the same thing for years until they retire.

Cons

Fitting the mold (straight, evangelical, rural, conservative) or pretending to if you can stomach it, makes it much more likely that you will have a satisfying career. Cronyism and nepotism are rampant and counter-productive to the future of this company. Average performance is rewarded, especially if you don't threaten the status quo. Some executives are decent and hard-working, but this company generally doesn't promote employees that can kick butt, lest someone upsets the apple cart. Group think is out of control at this place.
