Pros

Most employees are generally given a large amount of responsibility. You will do a lot and learn a lot. The company is on solid ground and should be financially fine for a number of years to come. The campus is nice. It's good to know that your are working on compounds that will actually go to market and help people out. If you can survive it you will have made money on the retention side (stock/rsu/espp). I'd say about 50% of new hires don't last more than 2 years.

Cons

To get ahead you are expected to work any day, any time at a moments notice and be 'committed'. For the most part, that's how the company works and that is what is expected to be in management. This leads to a very high burn and churn rate of employees. A lot of knowledge and experience exits the door. Expect to work while on vacation. Your line management constantly changes. It is difficulty to get any traction with your career. When your department management changes yearly, the goals and vision changes as well. Much of the time is spent in management transition periods. The daily work is high paced and projects are understaffed. You also have to seriously watch your back at all times.

Pros

Some leaders have a strong, clear vision CEO is inspiring Good compensation levels Some areas have a willingness to evolve Responsive to external events Budget levels are fit for purpose

Cons

Culture from Dan O'Day only goes through to his directs - more needs to be done to pull through a growth mindset and new behaviors. While the core values are great, they do not inform or drive behaviors for a conforming culture Some people whom are mediocre are not given the hard feedback on what they need to do to improve, they are kept there as a reward for their loyalty instead of being evaluated on the way they do their work Lack of career development for senior leaders (below executive levels) unless you seek it out yourself, based on your network/contacts Lack of understanding of what you may have done prior to joining Gilead and how your experience should be valued, as opposed having to prove yourself to the old-timers Still reactive, lack of strategic vision from some dept heads (VPs)

Quality Assurance Departments

Pros

The work in Quality Assurance is easy for the ridiculous amount of money being paid. Playing work politics well will lead to success! Stroking management egos will help increase career growth rate. Be sure to have breakfast/lunch with the boss and schedule after work outings that married colleagues with kids can’t attend. Also give praise to your boss on social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn. Improving a process or reducing issues at a vendor site is self defeating and gets no recognition. Allow a problem vendor to have issues escalating to Director or VP-level creates visibility - THEN solve the issue in front of them. Rinse and repeat! Guaranteed fast track promotion! Stay in your silo. If an outside department requests help, just say it is outside of your scope (which is true) and basically say “Not my problem” When boss asks you honest review of their management skills, ALWAYS give positive reviews. Negative reviews will result in below the radar retaliatory actions. There is a Beer community.

Cons

Career development paths and promotional criteria are outlined for each department and job title, but not adhered to. Promotion not based on achieving criteria or doing a good job, but on business need. If there is no business need, no amount of hard work will help. Best to take it easy and wait until next year. “Inclusion” is a cultural belief, but Management fails to make themselves equally accessible to all direct reports. They socialize with the same people over and over, providing the optics that they are not approachable (and have favorites). Transfers to other departments can be blocked, preventing career growth. Successful transfers are always lateral or lower in title (but pay is not decreased). Cannot transfer to a higher title. It does not matter if you have the appropriate skill level and meet the career path requirements for the higher title.
