Pros

Gilead is lean - which has pros and cons. The scope of work here may be much broader than other large companies. The work is fast-paced, and decisions are made quickly. Cross-functional teams are small, and we quickly develop strong networks throughout the company. We may work across several TAs and products. We gain a valuable breadth of experience which may not be possible at other, more siloed companies. We work with industry leading products.

Cons

The Gilead experience varies by group. But the overarching theme is dissatisfaction. The company struggles to retain talent as many employees leave within a few years. They struggle to attract talent given their reputation as a workplace and below-market compensation. Career advancement is very slow, and lateral moves are not always supported (varies by team). Your colleagues will openly talk about leaving the company.

A lot of work to be done, and no reward for your efforts

Pros

The company is doing well and the stocks are good (for now).

Cons

- overall low salaries compared to other biotech companies - VERY high turnover rate: company is expanding so fast that people who are not team players, not super competent, and/or are a bad personality fit are being hired solely as a pair of hands; this fosters a competitive and unpleasant work environment - people are overworked but under trained - upper management gets to decide when you will be promoted and how fast; the process is not transparent and what you have actually accomplished is not considered - you have no influence on what you want to work on; company needs trump your own personal career growth - feeling under appreciated for your efforts because your salary and bonuses do not reflect how hard you've worked and you are rarely rewarded for your accomplishments - INEFFICIENCY due to growing pains - many shortcuts are taken to fulfill timelines; this is probably not sustainable - bureaucratic hurdles - HORRIBLE morale because you are surrounded by people who are overworked, unhappy, and extremely stressed out
