Pros

It's a lot like school. You work really hard, learn a lot, gain confidence in your field. Some people are really nice, but unfortunately they don't stay.

Cons

People are generally unhappy. It's hard to work when you hear about people wanting to get out when the stocks hit a certain price. Turnover is about 20%. You don't get too much say in what you do. Its a little hurtful. Almost like they don't respect your opinions or concerns. It's like you're disposable labor. In the Bay Area, this is pretty common though, which is really unfortunate.

Challenging with good benefits, but many cons

Pros

Challenging work environment. Intelligent scientific team. Great benefits.

Cons

Micromanagement from the top down specifically in PDM department. Hindrance of innovation and growth of employees. No investment in mentoring and recognition. Antiquated systems. No consistent respect for work/ life balance leading to employee "burn-out". Management greatly suffers from a lack of transparency and openness about the "big picture" which hinders the level of investment, contribution, and loyalty employees have with projects. Hoarding information to maintain a sense of power and control is not conducive to a team environment.

Pros

Co-workers in my department were great people. Benefits were decent.

Cons

Top 5 Execs (who've been around WAY too long) have stunted the ability for positive growth and innovation in products. Their personal need to control too much of the business detail has created a distrustful and disrespectful environment. The people they hire who have brains, energy and experience are pretty quick to realize that this is a hostile, political place were "loyal" employees are rewarded for turning the other cheek and newer employees questioning the status quo are met with ostracizing. There is no in-between here: either happy people who've drank the kool aid or miserable people no longer applying themselves and looking for other jobs.
