A Not-So 'Great-Hearted' Review

Pros

Working with students can be highly rewarding, and depending on your department, you could have more liberty to build your own courses.

Cons

Management often promotes self-righteous, arrogant, individuals, who use GH's core values of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty to promote a narrow definition of said values, without any sense of humility. Many will hide behind these great ideas to avoid disagreements, while judging other faculty members who have philisophical differences. Additionally, there is virtually no room for financial or professional growth, especially if you do not fit GH's 'mold' of the homogenous type of person they deem to be "Great-Hearted". Finally, when administrators insist faculty members to do more than what is generally expected of a teacher in district schools, it's another reminder that GH teachers both are paid less than the average wage of Arizona teachers, and, that teachers are paid HIGHLY less than what GH managers make.

Pros

I get to do incredibly rewarding, enjoyable work in a network of schools that are revolutionizing education and renewing the culture. Many of my closest friends now are colleagues or former colleagues.

Cons

Teaching is hard and not terribly lucrative. But if you're going to teach, there is nowhere better to do it than Great Hearts.
