Pros

Fantastic people to work with. Smart, motivated, collegial. Very collaborative environment. Work with a lot of the latest technologies. Very stable company in a very stable market. Has the most rational management team I've encountered in thirty years in the industry.

Cons

Very consensus-driven to the point where it can be difficult to move projects ahead sometimes. Large staff and legacy codebase with a loooong tail means that it can be very difficult to figure out how or WHY something works the way it does.

Pros

Guidewire has allowed me to where many different hats since I joined 8 years ago. I was in customer support for a year, then I joined professional services for 5 years, and now I am a Product Manager working in the Development organization. It is rare to find companies that offer such career mobility. One of the other things that I appreciate is that our CEO still has an open door policy. If you have any concerns about the future direction of the company, or you don't understand a change in policy you can email him directly. The last part I will comment on is our Product Strategy. We have a laser like focus on serving the needs of one industry vertical: Property and Casualty Insurance. This industry is recession proof, and insurance is product every consumer owns, but rarely really thinks about. I was burnt by the dotcom bubble many years ago, and I value a company that has a real sustainable business model.

Cons

With over 1000 employees, you can't know everyone in the company anymore. It is surprising to get into an elevator, and have someone get off at on the same floor, and you never met them before.

Interesting place to work with good work life balance

Pros

Employees are open to explore the areas that interest them. The organization structure is more flexible than most enterprise software companies. Collegial feel. People actually have time to help each other. Considerable less politics and islands of control than most other companies of the size. Even the most contentious situations work themselves out better here than in other places. There are issues, but less intrusive on one's worklife than in most other companies or can be worked around. Good work-life balance I still sometimes wonder about some management decisions, but I know that if I am inclined I am open to question them and the decisions are more rational than at other companies.

Cons

The story about the company culture and organization structure is interesting, but if I just tell people that I work for a company that does software for the insurance industry that generally loses their interest :) The freedom for an employee to mold one's job and change the company's processes can work both ways. People who are just waiting on what to do next may stagnant or not take advantage of what the company has to offer. People that join the company looking for status or riches are not going to do well here. People succeed mostly on merits and how well they get along with people around them. There are no real overt status measures and stock grants are not likely to change one's life. This review is for the dev organization. The professional services feel may be quite different.
