Underpaid and overworked.

Pros

After 90 days you can buy gear at "cost" which can save a few bucks. Everything else about the job is terrible.

Cons

Managers under appreciated by corporate, so they don't appreciate their workers. The commission is bull, if you do the math you only need to make a buck or two an hour more somewhere to make the same pay annually. Yeah you can buy gear at "cost" but you'll never make enough to buy what you really want. Most locations are also an HR nightmare that treat customers like meat. 2 years working here and nothing has changed since day 1.

Pros

Great discounts. At the time it was base cost +10% on most items. Like-minded co workers. Lots of aspiring musicians and interesting people.

Cons

"Fading" hours - essentially every dollar you made on the clock you would have to pay back with your commission. If you ended up making more commission than your minimum wage salary, they would pay you the minimum wage and the difference in commission. Things like closing shifts (an hour of working with the store closed), merch parties (several hours after the store closes before sales), and morning meetings were all 'Faded' against commission. In addition, most new employees don't even understand this until after their first month there when they DON'T get a commission check or it's less than $50 for the entire month.

Pros

Amazing employee discount. I'll start off with that. You work at a shop where nearly every person coming through the door has something in common with you. You get to talk to cool people about all the things they're doing. You get to educate new musicians. It's an all around good time.

Cons

Most of the staff experience the classic "over-worked and under-paid" syndrome. The turn-over rate is insane, simply because the work that is expected and required is not met with a reasonable income. You have to be a phenomenal salesperson. all the while keeping the store clean and putting POPS (price tags) on everything and building displays. If you focus too much on sales and not cleaning, you get yelled at. If you focus too much on cleaning and not sales, you don't make any money and are yelled at. It's an impossible thing to juggle. Also, most associates are left feeling wildly under appreciated, despite the intense nature of the job and the high level of competency that is required to work there. ALSO, it's so sexist and a total boy's club. It's disheartening.
