Pros

- Flexible work hours, flexible dress code, etc. If you're getting your work done and contributing to the bottom line no one will mess with you about trivial stuff. - The ESOP here works like it should. I love working alongside motivated people who have bought into the ownership thinking. Our end of year profit-sharing checks (no individual bonus' here) have been phenomenal since I've been here because everyone is committed to keeping costs low and maximizing their value. - I really feel that management has my best interests at heart, and that's not always work-related. My fellow employees and managers know my family and understand that side of my life better than any other company worked at. - My individual salary is above market value. What else can you ask for than to be compensated well, work in a fun environment, and have great perks and benefits? - Great ideas can come from anywhere. You are empowered to think big and ideas aren't limited to your role, your experience, or your internal political standing. I've seen some of our coolest initiatives start from the most unexpected places. And if you have a great idea you feel strongly about, it's your job to push it through. This isn't a place where you tell someone in marketing your brilliant idea and then sit back and complain because no one listened to you. Push it, sell it, program it yourself if you are passionate about your idea. You have the ability and freedom to do that here.

Cons

- This place isn't for everyone. You have to be self-motivated to be successful here. People that depend upon others to tell them what to do every second of the day and need constant reassurance do not last. - To respond to a few of the negative posts here about the career path out of Support, I'd like to point out that several executives, half our product managers, and a majority of our implementers started in Support here. This is another example of complainers complaining vs. motivated employees taking responsibility for their own career path.

Planning maintenance and new development spending is tricky balancing act. We spend a lot of time working to get it right. There are times when we are focused more on new features and new products and there are times when we are focused on improving existing product features. For instance, last year, we simultaneously delivered what is now the market leading Safety system for Heavy Civil while putting in over 200 customer driven enhancements to our 30 year old HeavyBid system. This year we are doing a major technology upgrade to our existing GPS/Telematics product while also delivering new exciting new features like our Manager Mobile app and an advanced Mobile Mechanic App. It is almost impossible to get this balance perfect, but we are committed to keeping our existing products viable and relevant while also delivering new capabilities to the industry.

Pros

Full Disclosure: I am in management here and came to do a review to lend a different perspective. I have been in software product development for 25 years and have been at HCSS for 4 years. In that time, I have been in leadership roles helping the company double in revenue and roll out a whole new generation of mobile and web applications that are setting us up for many years of healthy growth. I can honestly say that this is the best job I have ever had. Why? - Our customers fanatically love us - We are a stable 30 year old market leader - We act and work like a "hungry" start up - There org is very flat - Very little politics - We are doing cool work in SaaS with fresh mobile and web applications - The people I work with act empowered and put action and decisiveness over analysis and risk mitigation - We are getting pretty good at launching new products - We are adopting new cultural norms focused on better collaboration, communication, intent, commitment management and focus on results. This is not a superficial change, but fundamental cultural change that is impacting the company performance.

Cons

The next few years will be challenging as we push through the 300-400 employee levels. We are maturing the next generation of middle management and that should help us make it through the growing pains, but it will be challenging none the less.
