Pros

Management at HMSA is concerned about vision and growth, but more importantly the company wants their members to be satisfied and their employees to be happy. Working on a small team allowed me to tend to personal family issues. HMSA is currently making accomodations for employees to work remotely as much as possible.

Cons

Work/life balance was difficult when you have a time-sensitive project. The opportunity to work remotely also requires the discipline to STOP working outside of business hours. Some project timelines require you to work on weekends, evenings, holidays.

Pros

There is a gym, garden and good health benefits. Too bad a lot of it just seems to be for show.

Cons

If you decide to work here, be sure to make friends with people in your department, because they will be the ones telling you what is going on at this place. After an online training segment and new hire orientation, you will be thrown 100% into your job left to sink or swim. Trust me, the training and orientation have nothing to do with your job assignments. Management will give you vague assignments. You are required to read their minds and complete the task perfectly on the first attempt. If not, expect it to show up on your review. Every mistake will be noted. If upper management hears about this mistake, expect severe punishment from your manager. If you do well, you will be given more assignments with little to no reward. If you hate your family and love living at work, come right on in! HMSA preaches well-being, but demands that you give up your personal time to meet unrealistic deadlines and complete impossible tasks. If you don't, you're lazy, you're letting your team down and disloyal to the company. Don't be surprised if your manager guilt trips you into working long hours, weekends and holidays. Understand that nothing is good enough. Despite putting in long hours and attempting to learn without adequate tools, they will only remember your mistakes. It will leave you feeling sad, angry, defeated and worthless. If you are still considering this company, let me leave you with one final note. They will promise you that change is coming. It will never come. People have been waiting for years, but the problems here are systemic. Turnover is high, the work is too demanding and managers aren't given time to invest in their staff. Their bosses prioritize other tasks over helping their employees. Many departments are overworked and overwhelmed.
