Pros

There are wonderful people that work at HMSA and that's probably the reason I've stayed as long as I have, 3 years. The company is making a big effort to walk the talk and improve the work we do for our community, and the environment we work in. In the last year HMSA has started a rooftop garden, introduced a weekly Farmer's Market, and brought in an outside vendor that sells salads to make it easy for employees to eat a healthy lunch. HMSA values work / life balance and the importance of family.

Cons

The corporate culture is in the process of changing, but there are still about 50% of the company that has "this is the way we've always done it" or "that's not my job" syndrome. People are complacent and there are so many layers of management and approvals that it takes a REALLY long time to get anything done. There are a lot of middle managers that don't have the authority to make decisions.

Pros

Online training and some technical classes are available for those that take the initiative to learn something new. Uses mostly microsoft products and tries to keep up to date with the latest technology or at least more so than other local companies.

Cons

People here will greatly influence whether you stay or leave very quickly. There is a fair amount of workers that are stuck in their ways and don't budge, even if change will make things easier for everyone. IT teams are silos, each protecting their own kingdom. There is lots of politics being played...more so than actual work being done. Managers will hear you out if you have some issue but they won't do anything about it.

Pros

- large company with good benefits such as 401K, paid time off, health care insurance - lots of opportunities for mobility and advancement (except at the executive level) - working at HMSA provides you with an excellent perspective of the healthcare landscape.

Cons

- Depending on the department, work is demanding. 50-70 hours a week at the management level. - Healthcare reform, faltering partnerships, and declining Medicare reimbursement are putting the company at risk - Tends to not promote to upper management internally - Politics of the company are reminiscent of the show Game of Thrones
