HR Needs an Upgrade

Pros

Benefits need some updating, flexibility, local team is great.

Cons

There is a level of dysfunction in the HR org that no one talks about or addresses. The lack of support from the top leadership down is frightening and it's all about favorites and not facts. Revolving door of people coming and going. Leader lacks OD and overall Leadership experience and turns a blind eye to inappropriate relationships on the team. If you come to HR org know there will be a lot of confusion on strategy (there isn't one) and the feeling of being in high school (you are either liked or not). If you are looking for a cohesive team led by a transparent, objective, strategic leader, this is not the place to work!

Pros

in the office I work, we have very good, bright people. the company gets decent jobs.

Cons

Management is horrific. This place is where politicians go, when they can't get into politics. "friends" get promoted, regardless of qualifications. They claim "client facing organizations" yet they have a mentality that plleasing the corporate folks is far more important than pleasing the client. we routinely lose client relationships and the few of us that care have to work very hard to regain the clients trust. The "having" of a process is much more important than the following of a process. benefits have increased much faster and higher than the national average, which is a shame as the benefits used to be the best thing about working here. I.T. has a 1 size fits all mentality when it comes to the PCs you are assigned. and that 1 size is way to underpowered for most users.

Pros

A lot of bright and talented individuals. A lot of complex and challenging projects to work on and they utilize the latest in design software and command a presence in the industry. They are respected in the civil engineering community. They've been around for over 100 years so they must be doing something right.

Cons

Moving up in the company can be tough depending on your own situation, it varies from office to office. Also they would rather "steal" top talent from another company instead of growing/promoting their loyal employees. A lot of "brown-nosing" individuals careers are accelerated even though the natural talent may not be there. Professional development was discussed but hardly ever supported. The employee review process was given much more importance but if your supervisor is unwilling (or doesn't care) to see you grow and succeed.....good luck. Also, the "legacy" (30+ years) employees were some of the most bitter individuals there. Some high level individuals were some of the most conceded people I've ever met, thinking they were "important" in their little HNTB bubble
