A value driven start up

Pros

Working in a start up is always fun.. The uncertainties, new learning, no boredom days make it an exciting work place. But there is one thing which most start ups are not known for.. their belief in value system. This is where HackerEarth is unique. While it offers all the fun of a start up culture; it also embraces a strong pro people culture. Belief in transparency - Most of the employees are aware of the business health of the organisation. The founders abreast the entire team monthly on how the company is progressing The decision making is collaborative and objective Every employee's opinion is heard.

Cons

Under-performing legacy products/businesses are a bottleneck for companies growth. Though the company has shed some of the old businesses/products but it needs to do a clinical job of it.

Thanks for the feedback. Your point about under-performing legacy products is noted and we are actively working towards to move away. Owing to the size of the business it will take some time but I feel the next FY will be much more aligned.

Pros

-Work culture is one amongst the best - Lot of connect sessions for employees with CEO/CTO ensures that you are always heard - CEO Sachin is a true inspiration to work with. He is just so graciously intelligent and compassionate even at the worst of business months. A true gem of a person- Personally and Professionally. CTO Vivek is very humble helper. He applied himself even on smallest of technical glitches and follows up till the time it is fixed. - Pantry is always filled with best of snacks, juices, confectionaries, tea, coffee and what not. Company ensures that everyone feels at ease and at home. - There is nothing that doesn't get celebrated here. Birthdays, Exits, Joining, Work Anniversaries, Festivals of all faiths, occasional pot lucks, team outings, team lunch, etc etc etc - Appraisals are punctual without any delay. Its very data centered and leaves an employee with clear picture of what to expect.

Cons

- Sometimes the amenities provided to staff like foozball, TT, Sleeping bean bags etc are actually a distraction for employees - Salary structure could be improved marginally. Not very bad though.

Have come a long way, still a long way to go

Pros

I am the first person to have been hired when a new org was created and when the headcount was in the mid 20s. I have seen HackerEarth grow from the fledging it was to what we are now. Thinking back, there is little I would like to change about to the way I have grown. HackerEarth has been a platform which has given me ample opportunities to learn - make decisions, learn from the wrong ones, take ownership and much more. This has been the case with understanding people, taking product decisions, debating engineering trade offs, processes, coordination with teams etc. After more than 2 years here, i can definitely say that I have come a long way but there is still a long way to go. Some of the pros at HackerEarth include: - Flexible environment to work and learn - Open to experimentation (till you communicate what you would like to achieve) - Open communication by top management: In my experience, this is by far the best communicating leadership in terms of future plans, people, hiring, targets, company performance, road map etc. - Hiring based on skills and ability to work with other people rather than pedigree - More ownership = more rewards (not all mentioned in the offer letter :) )

Cons

- Fewer meetings. Please. - Need for faster decision making and need to share learning with other teams - Hiring is cautious and reactive - Trust and communication within teams were an issue till 6 months back - has improved significantly and can improve further

Thanks a lot for the feedback, really delighted to see such feedback. We are also trying to reduce meetings, all ears how we can do it better without compromising work. Same goes for decision making. Didn't understand why cautious hiring is a con.
