Cliquish to the Extreme

Business Outlook

Pros

Working with books and really great customers.

Cons

HPB expects employees to lie to customers about what happens to the books we buy from them. There was a terrible culture of cliquishness, which management made worse. Don't expect to be working with like minded people if you are a book lover. We had many employees who either don't read at all, or have never tackled anything more difficult than Harry Potter. It was frustrating for those of us who actually know something about books. I can't help but feel that there was a fair amount of racism amongst our management. I wish they were as advanced when it comes to race as they are when it comes to LGBTQ employees and customers. They definately need to do a lot of work in this area.

HPB could be truly great if it did things different/better.

Pros

Working with the people and product that literally change lives for the better. Booksellers genuinely love what they do and it makes for a great environment to be in. Working with arts and literature and giving that to others is a singular joy.

Cons

Homogeneous environment from store to store now. There is nothing unique or interesting about HPB locations anymore. They all stock the same stuff a sales ranking program/algorithm tells them to i.e. 'if it sells we shelves'. Too many people stuck long term in positions without growth or challenge. This breeds bad habits and complacency. Side-line and Knick Knack items are a waste of time (high cost goods that don't add much to profits).

Becoming another corporate machine

Recommend

Business Outlook

Pros

Employee discount Checkout system Lower cost health insurance Decent vacation time although every year they keep reducing the amount of holidays they give you

Cons

HPB is on the fast track to becoming another big corporate machine that only cares about making money. Although they use the guise of “caring” for their employees; every year the company seems to be making more money while also paying their staff minimum wage while working them endlessly. The amount of heavy lifting, crappy customers/phone calls, knowledge of working the buying counter, & running a section is very demanding for the little pay that is given. Not to mention that the company keeps opening up more and more stores every year so that also drives down the amount of money received from any bonuses. I wish I had better things to say because I truly loved working for HPB the first year I was employed, but as time went on all the issues in the company just ware you down
