Pros

Great employee discount. Getting dibs on the cool stuff people bring in is a nice perk. People are open and supportive of personal identities and lgbt people. The people I worked with were often supportive, easy to get along with, and hard working. It was easy to get acclimated and I felt personally well trained despite some of my training coming from my coworkers and not management. My managers were open to a lot of store suggestions which was great. My store managers and shift leads were very patient and polite which helped me feel at ease when asking them to help correct my mistakes.

Cons

The CEO is openly antiunion and actively tries to dissuade employees from unionizing by coming to the store and giving long antiunion speeches. A few of my coworkers have worked for HPB for years and still have to live with their parents. Some of my coworkers are married with children and living with their parents because they can’t afford housing. My pay would not allow me to live alone. I could not afford to live in a one bedroom off of the pay. That is unacceptable to pay someone so they’re living paycheck to paycheck and can’t afford to even live alone. People who have been working here for years make barely more than a new hire. The compensation is insultingly low. You can not live off the pay. And there is no incentive to stay. Employees at half price books are undervalued, underpaid, and overworked.

Pros

Books are awesome. PTO, treat budget, Profit based bonuses.

Cons

New rules and regulations every day. With no transparency about how these rules came about or what they’re trying to improve. What should be streamlined, like training, with so many stores, is beaurocratic and clunky. Lower starting pay for certain kinds of stores, which makes no sense because those employees work just as hard as anyone else. Blamed for not meeting sales goals when literally not allowed to use social media to drive sales. In 2022. They like to say they have company sponsored programs to help you if you need it, and that they want everyone to succeed so there are lots of steps to take for discipline, but will still fire you with no warning and no disciplinary history if it so suits them. Corporate schills. Nobody has your back. The people who act like your friends definitely are not.

Pros

Dynamic and interesting work that allows you to learn about all types of books/movies/music. Good discount off of typical used merchandise. Good health insurance. Hires from within for management positions. Your coworkers are going to be far and away the best part of the job, so I hope you're lucky enough to land a good bunch.

Cons

Starvation wages and overburdened staff. Everyone is expected to know everything, yet they've eliminated key inventory and merchandising support. Opaque salary and raise criteria. They roll out ideas from corporate with no apparent understanding of who is going to do the work or when.
