Pros

Decent wages for people with no other options, but hard to turn into a career. Some coworkers take pride in their work and complete tasks to the best of their abilities.

Cons

Management is lazy and does whatever they can to cut corners. Rules are bias to company profits, not employee safety or concern. Over hiring of people to keep hours under 28 effectively reduces hours to 8 hours a week for my my coworkers. A quote from a service leader "I hate it when people don't pull 92's (excessive money in drawer) when they're supposed to. One time a register got held up at gunpoint and each robber got away with $500. It's ridiculous how lazy some of our cashiers are."

Great place to start, but often a dead end.

Pros

Full time positions offer good benefits (ins., dental, life) and vacation time after many years. I've got 5 weeks plus 5 personal days plus sick time after 25 years of being there. Pay is okay, other grocery chains pay more. Department managers make good money (35000 to start) and store managers much more. Depending on the store you are in, managers can be your best friend or make it difficult for you. Work conditions are good. Working mostly inside, clean, climate controlled, most employees are good people and easy to get along with.

Cons

After to reach "top of scale" your pay raises end and you receive a a lump sum check. I and many others I work with have not had a raise in many years which makes adjusting to inflation and economics difficult. It's a typical retail schedule, meaning you work weekends hours can be all over the place for some people....6 a.m. to 2 one day and 11-7 the next, etc. Things have changed since Del Haize purchased the company.
