Could Have Been Better

Pros

Great co-workers, lots of intelligence, vibrancy and humor in the workplace. Constant stream of engaging work on big bestselling books.

Cons

Workplace revolved around favoritism. Certain people made more vertical moves than others, and the employee turnover was surprisingly high. Lots of people expressed discontent at the length of time it took to receive promotions they felt were long overdue, at least compared to other publishing houses.

Pros

If you love books, they are all over. You will meet some nice people who love books to, and to talk about them, and get free books all the time.

Cons

So disappointed in my experience at Harper. They are stuck 25 years in the past. The environment is stuffy, cliquey, etc. Upper management thinks they're better than everyone else, and what they say and how they've been doing it for the last half century is apparently the only way. Don't expect any recognition, even a $10 starbucks giftcard at Christmas.

Pros

Great to work with authors, perk of free books, ability to be creative--I'd say the majority of positions in the company involve some degree of creativity. There are a good number of really passionate and talented people who can make you feel lucky to work here.

Cons

The usual publishing woes and lack of morale apply, since this is a company in the middle of a hugely evolving industry. Speaking of evolving--in terms of digital strategy, Harper isn't all that organized, which is really surprising, since all roads to the future point in that direction. There's little about their initiatives really feel state-of-the-art. Management varies imprint to imprint, but it sometimes feels as if the powers-that-be are comfortable accepting that the experiences of employees at the manager level (and above) are the only true indicator of the company's internal climate.
