Pros

-If you are someone looking to dip their toes into the start-up scene for the first time, then Headspace is a cool place to learn and execute ideas. -The folks who do the actual work, ya know, the folks who get their hands dirty working the salt mines, they are cool, brave, and believe in the Headspace mission to make the world happier and healthier. -Andy Puddicombe literally IS Headspace. He's the brand, the voice, the guru. Spending time with him, and learning from him is quite an experience. It's one I will cherish for the rest of my life. Andy, you are an amazing human being. -Free lunch, flexible work hours, interesting people!

Cons

-If you're the kind of person who works hard and wants to rise in the HS ranks, good luck sucker! Ain't gonna happen at HS. Dream on! -You've worked super-hard, brought value, and would like a raise? Suckerrrr!! Buh-bye! -The company is run by an inner cabal of VPs. There are over half dozen VPs in a company the size of roughly 180 employees. Here's an idea, get rid of these VPs suckling at Headspace's financial teats, and promote folks from below who are actually doing the real work. What the folks don't need - one more one-on-one meeting. -Oooo ooo look look, shiny object! So brilliant, I want it, and I want it now! That's how the VPs operate at HS. -All the great folks from engineering, analytics, finance, and marketing have left or are leaving. -But that's okay, because HS is in hiring frenzy. -They are brilliant at copying ideas from other tech companies, and then they brand it as "innovation." -Don't fool yourself, this is NOT a tech company; it's a content company, organized like an ad agency, posing to be a tech company with the hopes of becoming a platform to deliver meditation content. Ooo "platform", another buzz word the executives love using there. -Oh, did I fail to mention that there is absolutely no culture of debate and discord? The commandments are issued from Mt. Headspace, and the will of the executives has to surely be followed, otherwise you face imminent termination with no benefits. -The app subscription is expensive. -The values of the company are: kindness, authenticity, and creativity. Sadly the leadership exemplifies anything but. -Sadly, not a lot of Headspace employees really know what's going on. But then again, ignorance is bliss. -Good luck getting paid what your true market value is; but hey if you are an executive, pucker up your lips for that juicy teat. -You just got terminated and kicked out the door with no benefits? Oh, and you did valuable work, and you were kind and well liked at HS? Prepare to be bullied, insulted, and treated like garbage; Headspace kindness! ;)

Pros

Smart, passionate and creative set of talent. Great benefits with every other Friday off.

Cons

Egos, zero strategy, high executive turnover (4-5 heads of marketing in two years) that leads to company wide turnover, burnout and chaos. No room for growth - I can't tell you how many folks have left because execs will hire new people instead of fostering within. This company keeps on dead weight legacy teams that prevent them from being better than their biggest competitor, Calm. They need to check themselves and follow their playbook and actually address users who are struggling with mental health and need to chill out. I hope this burned out spark can get reignited.

Thank you so much for reaching out and sharing these views on whats working and whats not for you based on your current experience. There is an 'alignment triangle' that connects our Vision, our Northstar, our True North Goals, our Strategy + our Priorities/OKRs, and it seems that this may not be feeling as connected to you, your team and your work as it should be. - Please feel free to reach out to me directly to let me know how I or one of our People Business Partners can best support you, your team and your leader in gaining deeper connectivity and strategic alignment here. I'm proud to say that there is, has been and will continue to be opportunities for growth within the org: - An average of 10% of the new roles we opened in 2020 were filled thru Internal Mobility, this increased to 13% in Q1 of this year (this does not include # of promotions, lateral role changes - or increased roles & responsibilities). - I'd welcome any insights you can share with me directly (in confidence) where growth opportunities have been missed, overlooked and/or where we can again lean in to support reasonable and meaningful change here. Please feel free to reach out to me, Rick or our People Business Partners anytime if there's with any additional feedback you'd like to share. Here to help!
