Not very mindful

Pros

Good product, mostly good co-workers, flexible work environment

Cons

I’m very disappointed in Headspace and hesitated writing this after I left. Layoffs are normal, especially in high growth startups. The layoff of many of my colleagues in November was handled in a very poor fashion with little information given to management let alone those laid off as to why certain teammates of ours were let go. I recently learned that many of those laid off were minority leaders in ERG groups, intentional or not this is an extremely bad look. Headspace also did away with many of its DEI language in marketing assets. All of this happened since the current CEO, Tom, came in. Many of the benefits that attracted top talent (ie MindDays, every other Friday off) were done away with to “be more productive.” It’s obvious Headspace values a profit over their people. Their change management was also atrocious. There were significantly too many tools used to accomplish one job. Why not cut redundant software contracts vs cutting 13% of the population? I would never suggest someone work there or use their product going forward. Many current employees who have been there years are looking for other work.

Least Zen Workplace

Pros

A nice new building (although next to SM dump). Overall nice, enthusiastic people.

Cons

Unorganized and disruptive. Maybe in a few years they will behave like a grown up organization; might be typical startup culture. The act of being mindful doesn't reflect in business practices.

On the trajectory of Nasty Gal

Pros

The majority of employees who are in the trenches are here because they believe in the company mission. Benefits and office perks are great - plenty of lunches and fun parties. If you are in engineering or creative, leadership will treat you moderately better than the other teams.

Cons

"Inauthentic" feels like the #1 leadership quality at this meditation company. Be very wary of what the CEO and CFO say: Subscriber engagement? Quality of data? Financials? Career path? Vision? Answer: "We are hoping to have this solved in a few months once we've hired another set of consultants." Then they'll ignore you until they find some unsuspecting new hire/investor to help "increase the help and happiness of the world". The VPs appear to be completely powerless and leadership ensures they remain impotent. If you are hired to "manage" a team at Headspace, be prepared to have an inherent lack of trust from your direct reports since you're an emperor with no clothes. This is not a company that advances employees internally. The current employee off-boarding process does not resemble anything close to the company value of "kindness". Gender issues are vaguely addressed but no material action is taken.
