Pros

Overall great place to work. I have been an employee at Health Catalyst for almost nine years. I have seen many ups and downs and lots of change. Most of the change is a result of growth and having to change to meet the new challenge of that growth. I feel like during that time, I have also grown considerably in my knowledge and skills which I am very thankful for. I think HC leadership sincerely wants to help our clients and their patients. HC leadership listens to employees and wants them to feel welcome regardless of backgrounds. I think this is evident in adopting interest groups such as the LGBT Affinity Group, Women Empowered Group, Veterans and Allies, and most recently a Team Members of Color, Champions, and Allies. HC has flexible PTO that has personally enabled me to be able to attend family events as my kids are highly involved in athletics which I greatly appreciate. I also enjoy being able to work from home which has provided even more flexibility. The benefits and compensation at Health Catalyst are very fair and there is a concerted effort to try to promote although it's not always perfect. Most employees are hardworking and easy to work with and are capable in their different roles.

Cons

Because there has been significant growth, there has been a lot of change. I think people that have been with the company for a long time are comfortable with that change because we are used to it. I think it is harder for new employees that are not used to rapid change. I do think that executive management makes decisions base on where we are currently at without thinking how that change will be implemented at older clients or a plan on how to roll it out to older client. Process has not been a strength at HC. I think this is a cultural attribute of a small startup that needs to change as we are now a larger company. Fortunately, there are initiatives to address this weakness, but it is still a shortcoming. Lastly, although a positive for many, the flexibility offered to employees means some take advantage. I often have not been able to contact critical HC employees that are client facing when there is a fire at a client. I have also had clients criticize the amount of time we are given for holidays which often times makes it hard to deliver on timelines. We have to be better at supporting our clients during the generous holiday days off.

Thank you for your review and for your many contributions these past 9 years! I also appreciate your leadership along the way as well. I appreciate your feedback about how we can improve, including finding ways to stay more connected to the front lines at clients. I've found it helpful to remain on the governance committee for a number of our clients to give me a regular direct checkpoint to hear from clients about what is going well, what could be improved, and what their priorities are. We are looking for ways to enable more of our senior leaders to have similar experiences to enable this connection to the field and to our clients. We'll also work to prioritize direct feedback through skip-level 1:1s and other sources of direct, unfiltered feedback. Thank you again for your direct feedback! Best, Dan

Best Place to Work

Pros

Of all the jobs I've ever had, Health Catalyst is by far the best place to work. We as team members (employees) are truly what drive the executive leadership team to be great. Dan (CEO) embodies the cultural values of the company and as a team member I trust our leadership to make the best decisions for our company as well as each of us as individuals. Dan has lobbied in our favor with the board so many times, I can't count - from bonuses to stock options. We have amazing benefits that go above and beyond what I consider to be expected from an employers, and we're compensated very fairly. We work hard and are rewarded for it. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

Cons

While I'll list cons, these themes are by no means isolated to Health Catalyst. 1) The cultural values, respect for team members, and humbleness is not systemic throughout the organization as leadership assumes. Some mid-level managers exhibit selfish, boastful, disrespectful behavior when left unsupervised. 2) Technically-skilled team members are promoted into HR-manager roles when they have no real skills to be leading a team. 3) People are allowed to change roles frequently, often moving from a higher pay grade into a lower pay grade, and instead of putting the individual in the level that aligns with their skillset, they are put into a level that corresponds to their salary. As a result, there are individuals with low skills in high-level roles. This doesn't feel right to the staff in the same role with higher skills but at a lower level - and thus lower pay - who haven't been changing roles.

Thank you for your feedback, for your support and for your advice. I appreciate. Your feedback, coupled with other similar feedback, has led to changes in the way we respond to questions in the Q&A sessions, to move more efficiently and to group questions together as well. I hope it feels like an improvement -- it does to me, and I appreciated the suggestion. I also appreciate the feedback regarding career changes and related compensation changes, from an equity and fairness perspective. And I appreciate the feedback that we have some work to do to emphasize the importance of adherence in every position, at every level, to the Health Catalyst operating principles and cultural attributes. We'll keep emphasizing this! Thank you for your 5-7 years of contributions to our company's growth and success. I sincerely appreciate it! Best, Dan

Pros

After 5 years with the company, I remain convinced that team members strive to live by the company's cultural values. This is constantly reinforced with unparalleled transparency in most operational areas of the organization and examples of assuming positive intent. I strongly agree with the company's benefit philosophy and have never felt the need to seek opportunities outside the organization. In a running experiment, I've sought to maintain a healthy and appropriate work/life balance with a keen eye for negative feedback - which has never come.

Cons

My criticisms are mostly short-lived, with corrections and adjustments happening frequently. I have concerns that the culture can be sustained in the face of becoming publicly traded and rapid expansion through acquisitions. Career paths are largely undefined, with some team members navigating better than others. Given the origins of the company, it is no surprise that there are close personal connections among team members with the longest lengths of service, which can make organizational changes seem cliquish. Recent acquisitions may offer more opportunities, but will also muddy the waters for the short term.

Thank you for your review and feedback, and for your five-plus years of contributions to our company as a product owner! I'm also really pleased to hear that you've been able to maintain good work/life balance throughout these five years -- that is certainly our hope for every team member. Thanks also for our feedback about the importance of maintaining the culture as we scale, and of enabling successful integration of our acquired companies. I agree that this takes particular focus. Thank you again for your feedback and for your many years of contributions! Best, Dan
