Pros

- Decent compensation - Great benefits

Cons

- Be prepared to work 55-80 hours a week - Be prepared to have no life outside of work - Be prepared to only be rewarded for your hard work with more work dumped on you and your hours increasing

Pros

-Great benefits -Stable work since its government funded

Cons

-Superintendents in the Nashville area treat field engineers terribly (expect you to be on call 24/7 and then get mad if you don't pick up) -Lack of diversity and my superintendents would make fun of diversity training -Expected to work 60 hours a week even if things are running smoothly -If you do not suck up to your boss you will not move up as fast or you will get bad work assignments -Weekend work is mandatory -You will have no quality of life unless you force it upon management and then they will resent you for not falling in line like everyone else.

Hensel Phelps Response

We appreciate you taking the time to write a review. Hensel Phelps recognizes the time our employees spend to build landmark projects and that the construction industry can be extremely demanding. Like you have mentioned, we are proud to provide our people with some of the best benefits in the industry, and those benefits are designed to compensate for those extra hours spent on the jobsite. As our company continues to grow, so does our culture. We understand the importance of having leadership that inspires the development of our people, which is why we are always refining and adding training material to our extensive inclusion and equity program. However, we know that training alone is not enough. A commitment to diversity must permeate all elements of a business, including workplace culture. We agree that it is unacceptable for any member of management to make fun of diversity training. One of our core values is diversity and we expect all employees, managers or not, to embrace that core value. Thank you for providing us with your comments, we wish you well in your career.

Some good and some needs improvement

Pros

Hensel Phelps develops/trains people extremely well and promotes a high-accountability work culture. They are all great teachers and really buy into “train your replacement” and other company mantras. They also have unmatched benefits and extremely smart processes. If there is something to do, Hensel Phelps has figured out the best way to do it. If you know a better way, they’ll listen and you’ll be rewarded for it. They are clear communicators about their processes and very good at creating consistency in the way their people do things. Nobody in the company is above any job task, which speak volumes. HP craft is amazing.

Cons

Work life balance is not always bad. However, the company culture around this topic is fractured. There are some leaders in the company that believe that there is a correlation between hours worked and productiveness. Many employees are intimidated into staying long hours, even if they don’t have any more work that day. It is common for employees to work 10+ hours at slower project stages out of fear of hazing by mid level management. Diversity also could use work. Harassment of protected class employees isn’t always appropriately addressed. It seems that the company focus more on social events than actual inclusion. There is a lack of transparency regarding job placement.
