Tons of responsibility, no work life balance, pulling teeth to be compensated

Pros

Holder sticks you in situations where you either succeed or crash and burn. Typically through your mistakes you further develop. Decent pay for most part, a yearly bonus, and a 3-5% yearly raise.

Cons

There is 0 work life balance with this company. 75% of the revenue comes from data centers which is from the get go a get it done as fast as possible type job. The new clients that are bringing in most of the revenue create these mega jobs where communication between the project team is slim to none and you are working ungodly hours. The normal day for the field is 12 hours and I personally was on a 12 on 2 off schedule for a year and a half in order to cover my scope of work. The first promotion is typically given within a year of employment but this is to keep you around and incentivized after they had just spent the last year plus working you to the bone. They preach about continued development and they offer a knowledge center but as to on the job training it depends on who’s above you and if they even want to spend the time developing you at all. The most recent company download it was shown that less than 50% of the company has been here for 5+ years so the turn over rate is insane. The blue chip employees typically work their butts off and get burnt out and quit only to have a few quality guys stick around and then you end up being surrounded by the slackers who hid in the shadows. They had told me when I was recruited that I would be incentivized for when I was to travel with the company. I spent over a year 10 hours away from home working my 12 on 2 off with no incentive what so ever to then have them send me to another project in one of their home office cities for the next year with again no travel incentive on my salary. I now have to plead my case to the company leadership as to why I deserve more money when I am still 10+ hours away from home and they had told me I would be paid if I traveled. Holder is great at being very flashy and impressive but when you get in to the thick of things they really don’t care about you as an employee.

Thank you for your feedback and we appreciate your service with Holder. Our company success of over 90% repeat client business and doubling our headcount and revenue over the last 6 years speaks volumes about the opportunities we are providing our associates and what the future holds. You are correct; we are a company of hardworking, dedicated associates, and we value and support the work-life balance that kind of loyalty deserves. This kind of commitment and enthusiasm is the key to our success and why blue-chip clients seek us out. At Holder, our promise is to recognize those associates who are high-performing through opportunity and promotions. We do have a high percentage of associates who have been here 5 years or less, but that’s due to growth not turnover. In fact, our turnover is in the single digits and well below the average turnover rate for our industry. While 75% of revenue comes from Data Centers, they only account for 1/3 of our projects. We have a diverse market strategy with presence in Corporate/Commercial, Aviation, Higher Education, and Hospitality that all show strong promise for the future. It’s a very exciting time to be a part of Holder!

Pros

You are given much responsibility and learn a lot.

Cons

Work Life Balance: You are expected to work 60-70 hours a week on average-doesn’t matter if you are in the field or in the office. You are constantly under a lot of pressure and overloaded with work. You are expected to work well past 10 hours a day, and if you attempt to leave after 8 hours, you will get looks from managers (sometimes may even get stopped by them on your way out ). Work Environment: There is no true leadership in the company. People are conditioned to be workers and work under scrutiny constantly. Their tactic is to instill fear so that they can mold employees into whatever image best suits them. Many people with the title of VP or Senior Manager have no real leadership skills. They hold these positions because they learned to keep their heads down when getting yelled at by upper management, and trample over people with the same title or beneath them as soon as they get an opportunity. Camaraderie between field staff and the office is nonexistent-field staff is treated like less and lives in constant fear because of management. There is absolutely no diversity within this company. I’d say it’s a 50:1 ratio of Caucasian to any other minorities with no one of color in any sort of leadership position. Pay: When comparing the number of hours worked to salary given by Holder, employees are vastly underpaid. After leaving Holder, I personally was paid 15k more with better benefits for the same exact position at a different company (not including a 15k bonus and an existentially much better work life balance). Do not let their fancy projects and technology lure you in. Truthfully 70% of projects are data centers (which are basically ugly box buildings). Do not waste your time and talent on this company. Leaving was a great decision.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Holder’s associate growth strategy involves promoting and hiring internally. To ensure we have a pipeline of associates available to step up and fill vacant positions, we give associates great responsibility and valuable experience early on in their career. This responsibility inherently comes with longer hours, but not at the expense of work-life balance. Holder encourages all associates to take time each day and utilize PTO throughout the year to unplug and recharge to avoid burnout. We are sorry to hear you felt intimidated and unable to do so, and we encourage associates to have conversations with their manager should workload become unmanageable. Holder is the leading data center contractor in the country, and they comprise 28% of current and past projects in our portfolio. We are proud to be trusted by numerous blue chip clients to construct their highly complex and critical infrastructure. The remaining 72% of our project portfolio consists of diverse product types in various markets including higher education, aviation, hospitality, and corporate and commercial office buildings. Company leadership is dedicated to tackling the lack of diversity within the construction industry and at Holder. We have assembled a dedicated team to lead our diversity and inclusion initiative, and on-going, company wide inclusion training. Holder has a dedicated diversity and inclusion officer, who solely focuses on increasing the diversity in our offices and on our job sites. Our D&I officer directly supports our diverse Holder associates, many of which we recruit directly from several HBCUs across the country. Additionally, Holder has established a community foundation to support social justice with an associate advisory board.
