Pros
Helping kids and families reach their academic goals through one on one teaching. Test Prep (ACT/ SAT) are successful programs, albeit very expensive (3000.00).
Cons
Ambiguous training without clear objectives or instruction. Poor management, salary and hours. Fulltime staff are not afforded any insurance coverage at all and the highest salaries they offer are lower than a first year public school teacher in any rural setting, let alone a metropolitan area. HLC (Huntington Learning Centers) do not use research based instructional strategies. Nor do they provide current curricula or do they possess any wish to get any. Management typically has no educational background or college degree to speak of. Lastly, because this is a franchise it is difficult to know if other franchises operate similarly. Supplemental educational services have no obligation to the state so they can virtually operate as glorified tutors and charge families exorbitant fees to enroll. Having been in a formal school leadership capacity for the better part of a decade, I used this opportunity to learn about this industry and considered purchasing a franchise to retire with. I was sadly disappointed with the lack of professionalism and the poor manner in which families are "persuaded" to enroll in lengthy and costly programs.
