Pros

Coworkers were nice. Some students were nice to work with. There are not many benefits to working here.

Cons

The curriculum is not up to date. Training on the curriculum is minimal and management expects you to come in early unpaid to review curriculum. The schedule is sent out very late, like Friday or in worst cases Saturday, for the following week. Then, after the schedule comes out, it will change several times which makes it extremely difficult to make plans. You are not told who or what your are teaching until you arrive. If you arrive and your student does not show, you are told to leave and are not paid for the 30 minutes- and hour you are expected to wait. This happens a lot. Management does not even offer an apology for wasting your time. They do not care about staff. They only care about making customers happy.

Pros

Working with the students is rewarding. It is great to see them grow. I liked and respected the teachers on. I learned a lot about communicating with students, teachers, and parents. The Center Director worked really hard to keep things running smoothly despite the owners incompetence. The ACT and reading comprehension programs are effective if the students are willing to work hard. The math programs are woefully out of date, they are not based on best practices. I think this is a good part time job for teachers, although the pay is quite low. Good amount of vacation time is offered to directors.

Cons

I was consistently paid 3 to 5 days after payday. I was asked to "hold my paycheck" before depositing it. The owners do not know how to run a business. They are hardly ever there, only check in to see how much tuition money is coming in. Bill collectors called and hounded us about owner's unpaid bills. The computers and software are so outdated that it interfered with doing work properly. Even at the corporate level, I got the impression that no one knew how to effectively carry out services. Owners pressure onsite management to force to parents to sign up for long, expensive programs. Families that needed to quit HLC waited up to nine months to get their tuition reimbursed. Some of the curriculum is so out of date it uses terms like "retarded" to describe people with disabilities. Hours are extremely long and pay is low. And one book said that "Computers are becoming increasingly popular and will soon replace typewriters." I worked at one in the Midwest, but prefer not to say where.
